In both Secret Team and Cry for Help, notice how Pearl’s body language, stiff with wide eyes, is an indicator that she is afraid. She gives a mean cold shoulder and, to Pearl and Amethyst, who look to Garnet for validation and strength, that’s losing a light source in a dark room. Angry Garnet directs her focus onto anything except you. But instead she tries to justify herself, tries to make herself small. If Garnet were proven to react in a physical way, then she would have done so. In Cry for Help, she’s not shielding herself from some incoming attack. The body language of that scene tells us as much. But I doubt her fear was towards Garnet’s retaliating in a physical way. Again, her not correcting Amethyst in Secret Team may be a result of her own fear. In Cry for Help, when she finds out Pearl was lying to her to fuse, Garnet was incredibly angry and Pearl was visibly frightened. It’s intimidating knowing that you’ve done something wrong in her eyes.īut I also think it was established rather early that Garnet isn’t the type to physically be angry. We learn firsthand from Peridot that Garnet, in the eyes of gems, has the capacity to be a non-stop war machine. I think the impression most people got from their reaction to Garnet’s possible wrath is that it would be physical in nature. “She’s going to kill us!” sounds like a physical threat and given Garnet is a bigger, physically stronger fusion, it’s possible that conclusions were drawn about how threatening that could be. There is some disproportionate fear towards Garnet, but not for the reasons we think I have some thoughts about this! It’s true we don’t see this vocalised fear in other episodes, but I do think that some of the issues in Crystal Gem dynamics haven’t been completely addressed in the show. Their behavior seems weirdly out-of-character: Why ARE they so afraid of Garnet here? Amethyst even says, "She's gonna kill us!" and Pearl, usually not one for exaggerating (she's ALWAYS corrected others) doesn't correct her or call her out for hyperbole? So we're to believe they were actually afraid to the point of letting Steven take the heat for them! Seriously, this fear is nowhere else to be found in other episodes. That means that despite there being a good reason for Amethyst to be as weak as she currently is, we should watch out: the show might be hinting that it’s possible for our Amethyst to become as strong as she was meant to be.Flowerapplejacks asked: I want an explanation for Pearl and Amethyst's behavior in Secret Team. So it appears that when thrown into a fusion, Amethyst brings a lot more power than Pearl does despite not out-massing her by much (she may be much stockier, but she’s far shorter). Plus, even though size isn’t everything (see Rainbow Quartz) it seems to normally be a good indicator of power, and Opal is far bigger than Garnet while Amethyst and Pearl seem roughly equivalent in mass with Ruby and Sapphire. There’s also an interesting pattern in fusions: Sugilite, formed when Garnet fuses with Amethyst, is much bigger and stronger than Sardonyx, formed when Garnet fuses with Pearl. ![]() Depending on how it’s interpreted, one line might even have said that Amethyst could even look like a normal Amethyst if she knew what they looked like (of course it could also mean she’d know what she was missing if she had seen a normal Amethyst). If it makes sense though, why do we wonder? Peridot gave us a lot to think about in Too Far, saying that Amethyst can do everything a normal quartz can do after seeing a display of her prowess with her whip. Reformed even seemed to show that Amethyst’s gem simply couldn’t handle generating a physical form more appropriate to a quartz, malfunctioning under the stress. This means it would make sense for Amethyst to be permanently weak. Amethyst is, however, an “overcooked runt”, having stayed in the ground for too long. We know that a quartz should be very strong-Jasper was at least as strong as Garnet. After Reformed she started fighting quite a bit smarter, but what is her potential for raw power? Amethyst started the series as the least effective warrior of the Crystal Gems: far weaker than Garnet, she seemed to have a knack for using her whip to place herself or the team in danger, and little else.
